Alvin Mares, Ph.D.

Hello! I’m Dr. Alvin Mares, a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) with over 12 years of experience working with adults and couples. Since the start of Mares Cares Counseling in October 2013, I’ve had the privilege of helping clients navigate life’s many transitions, whether it’s the beginning or end of a relationship, a shift in health, job changes, family dynamics, or financial stress. With extensive experience supporting law enforcement and corrections officers, I bring a grounded understanding of the unique stressors faced in high-responsibility roles in our community. I am also adept in couples counseling and offer a thoughtful male perspective that fosters trust, authenticity, and meaningful growth.

I currently see clients at our East Main Street location and offer both in-person and virtual or teletherapy sessions. My availability is Tuesday through Thursday, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and I work to provide a space that is supportive, solution-focused, and tailored to your goals.

My therapeutic approach draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I believe therapy should empower you to make meaningful decisions and create sustainable change. Whether you're coming in as an individual or as a couple, I enjoy helping people figure out what works best for them during life’s challenging, and sometimes exciting, turning points.

I was born and raised in Kent, Ohio, but I’ve called Chillicothe home since 2010, when I married the love of my life, Trish, who was born and raised here. Together we’ve built a life rooted in family and community. I’m a proud father to five adult children (two biological and three stepchildren) and six grandchildren.

 

Before becoming a therapist and small business owner, I spent time in academia, and that background continues to inform my thoughtful, collaborative approach to care.
