Teletherapy has opened up a world of possibilities for receiving care from the comfort of home. However, creating an environment that fosters connection and focus is key to making your sessions as effective as possible. Whether you’re new to teletherapy or a seasoned virtual visitor, these tips will help you get the most out of your experience.

1. Pick the Perfect Spot (Privacy Matters!)

Choose a location in your home where you can close the door and minimize distractions. A private, secure space not only allows you to focus but also protects your confidentiality. If you have little ones at home, make arrangements for childcare during your session so you can dedicate your full attention to the conversation. And no, hiding in the laundry room doesn’t count—you deserve a space that’s comfortable and calm!

2. Let There Be Light (But Not Too Much!)

Good lighting isn’t just for selfies; it’s also important for teletherapy! Position yourself in a well-lit area where your face is clearly visible. Natural light from a nearby window works wonders but avoid sitting with your back to the light—you’ll end up looking like a shadowy figure from a mystery movie. If natural light isn’t an option, a desk lamp.

3. Wi-Fi Wisdom (Keep It Secure!)

Public Wi-Fi might be fine for browsing memes, but it’s a no-go for teletherapy. Always use a secure, password-protected network to ensure your session stays private. If your connection is spotty, consider asking others in your household to pause their streaming or gaming while you’re in session. Your mental health deserves VIP bandwidth status!

4. Find Your Angle (Literally)

Set up your camera so you’re visible from the waist up. This allows for better non-verbal communication and helps your therapist pick up on cues like posture and gestures. If others are joining the session for couples or family counseling, make sure everyone fits comfortably in the frame. Nobody wants to play “Where’s Waldo?” in a teletherapy session.

Bonus Tip: Prepare for Success

Before your session starts, take a moment to gather anything you might need, like tissues, water, or a notepad. Logging in a few minutes early to troubleshoot any tech issues can also save valuable time.

At Mares Cares Counseling, we’re here to strengthen and support you—even in the virtual world. Following these tips will set the stage for productive, meaningful sessions that bring you closer to your goals.
